It can be a daunting and confusing experience if you're new to waxing. But honestly, there's nothing to worry about at all. Let's take a step into the unknown and discover what goes on in a waxing service...
Before any treatment commences, your therapist should always carry out a thorough consultation to ensure that there is nothing going on that would prevent the service being carried out, and to fully explain what will happen during the treatment. This is to put you at ease and make sure you're both on the same page regarding the end result. Especially with intimate waxing there can be some confusion about the different levels of hair removal and various names so it's always an excellent idea to double check!
After consultation, your therapist will ask you to remove clothing from the area to be waxed and should provide you with a 'modesty towel' to cover up. They'll likely leave the room at this point and if you're booked for intimate waxing, there should be some feminine wipes or similar for you to freshen up. Then it's time to hop on the couch and let your therapist know when you're ready for them to return. Before beginning your treatment - your waxer should pop on some gloves.
We use two types of wax at Metamorfosis, wax:one Hot Wax & Strip Wax. Before any wax is applied, a pre-wax cleanser should be used to thoroughly cleanse the area of any oils, make-up, deodorant etc, ensuring the skin is properly primed for the best results. Our strip wax is applied super thinly with a disposable spatula, in the direction of hair growth and is immediately removed in small sections with a blended wax strip. Each spatula should be discarded once the wax has been applied to skin, we don't double dip at Metamorfosis! The wax adheres to both the hair and skin and is removed against the direction of hair growth. Once the area is completely hair-free, a post-wax oil will be applied to soothe the skin. Strip wax is best for arms, legs and larger areas such as chest and back.
Hot wax works a little differently, there are no strips involved and it also works at a lower temperature. Best for facial waxing, underarms and all intimate areas. After cleansing, a small amount of pre-wax oil will be applied to the skin to protect and form a barrier. Then the wax will be applied to the hair in small patches, going from the hair to a hair-free area and a small grip tab will be made to make removal super easy. The hot wax works by shrink wrapping around each hair as it sets and doesn't adhere to the skin due to the oil which is also applied immediately after removal to soothe the area and ensure the skin remains protected. Once all the hair has been removed, the post-wax oil will be applied to the entire area and you're good to go!
After every waxing service your therapist should thoroughly explain the aftercare advice and I always make sure that I send a little card home with every client in case they forget!
When it comes to intimate waxing I much prefer hot wax as these delicate areas benefit from the lower wax temperature which is gentler on the skin. I recently conducted a poll of non-waxers to find out the reasons why they shy away from intimate waxing and favour the razor. I expected the top reason to be fear of a painful treatment, but I was surprised to learn that embarrassment was number one! Let me put this to bed once and for all - as a professional waxer I can tell you that there is absolutely no reason to feel embarrassed. We do this daily and are completely focused on the task at hand, ensuring you leave completely hair free!
Trust me when I say that the benefits of waxing far outweigh any potential drawbacks. Any waxer worth booking will happily chat with you prior to an appointment to answer any questions you may have and give you honest advice.
